A happy familyFamily Counseling Education

Confidential Family Counseling Education is:

  • family-centered
  • reality-based
  • goal-oriented
  • offered with the basic premise of preventing family disruption or placement of a child outside the home if possible

After a free assessment conference, if it is decided that UMCH can help the individual or family, then a session is arranged. Sessions are offered at a time convenient to the client and in a mutually agreed-upon location. A sliding fee scale related to the client’s ability to pay is used, and payment is expected at the conclusion of each session unless other arrangements have been made. Contact the closest UMCH office for more information.

Parenting classParenting Classes

Classes to cover the basic topics of parenting children from infancy to late teens are offered to individuals (parents and/or other caregivers). Instructors use the Active Parenting curriculum, and participants learn about:

  • the ages and stages of development
  • discipline
  • safety
  • other important parenting topics

Participation may be voluntary or court-ordered. Each participant is expected to attend all sessions, and each is given a certificate of completion at the end of the last required session. Call the closest UMCH office for more information.

UMCH staff may also conduct Parenting Classes with the Active Parenting curriculum for schools, churches and other groups.

Financial aidFinancial Aid

Funds are available at the first of each month to help 10 or 12 families with a documented need who have a child or children under 18 in the home. Applicants must call the Housing/Financial Aid Line at 404.327.5872 for eligibility requirements, then call the closest UMCH office to apply. No walk-ins accepted.

After the application and documentation are assessed and approved, a check is sent to the service provider (landlord, utility company, grocery, etc.).

Help is given only one time per family.

Short-term family houseingShort-term Family Housing

Eight fully furnished apartments are located on the Decatur campus of the United Methodist Children’s Home. These units are available for families who have at least one child at or under the age of 17 in their care. Short-term Family Housing typically lasts for about 30 days, intending to fill the gap between emergency and transitional housing.

The Short-term Family Housing program also offers supportive budget and employment counseling. Planning for the family’s next living environment beings immediately following entrance into the program.
