Volunteer with Us!

Volunteer reading to child

Volunteers are a crucial part of The Children’s Home, improving the lives of the children and families we serve.  We have many different opportunities for you to take part in our vision.

Volunteer Opportunities for Individuals
  • Childcare:

Childcare volunteers are needed on a regular basis here on our campus to care for children while their parents attend coaching sessions or training. This is a chance to play with the children in a relaxed and joyful setting, while getting to know other volunteers. Babysitting at The Children’s Home requires a full application and background check.

  • Tutoring or mentoring:

Volunteers may teach a child to read, help with homework, or tutor in a specific subject. Volunteers are needed for all grade levels, from elementary through college. Tutors and mentors have a direct and lasting impact on the people we serve. This work is one-on-one with our children and adults and therefore requires a full application and background check, as well as patience and dedication. It is also incredibly rewarding!

  • Clerical assistance:

For individuals or small groups available during business hours, one-time or ongoing opportunities include mailings, copying, filing, computer work, data entry, and basic research.  Administrative volunteer tasks are appropriate for volunteers who are 16 years of age or older.

Volunteer Opportunities for Groups
  • Maintenance:

With 33 buildings on almost 100 acres, volunteers are essential for keeping our Decatur campus beautiful for our residents! Landscaping and maintenance projects are perfect for youth groups and adult groups. Groups are scheduled one Saturday per month and on weekdays. Work may include weeding, trimming, raking, mulching, painting, power-washing, or cleaning.

  • Special projects:

We need licensed professionals to help with flooring, carpentry, plumbing, and electrical projects.

  • Special events:

We need volunteers to assist with flea markets, fundraising events, and other celebrations such as graduations or holidays. Volunteers are usually needed in the evenings and on weekends and provide our guests with a welcoming atmosphere, information, directions within the facility, and assistance to help events run smoothly.

How to volunteer:

Groups may fill out this short group volunteer information form to give us an idea of who you are and when you would like to volunteer. Volunteer shifts are usually scheduled in 2 – 3 hour increments.  Please be aware that filling out the form does not guarantee that the time you request will be available. When we receive the form, we will contact you within 2 to 3 business days to discuss scheduling.

Individuals may fill out a volunteer application. Some volunteer positions require an application, additional forms, a background check, and onsite training because we take the safety of our children, adults, staff and volunteers very seriously. If you are interested in a task that requires a background check and/or interview, we will be in touch to schedule with you. Please give us 2-3 business days to respond to your inquiry.

Thank you for your interest in helping us change lives at The United Methodist Children’s Home!
