The Nurturing Connections Second Chance Program at the United Methodist Children’s Home serves to empower, emotionally support, and foster parenting teens into becoming responsible, nurturing and accomplished young adults.

Nurturing Connections introduces parenting teens to a high level of supervision in a home-based environment. The program is staffed by professionals who provide 24-hour support to teach and help teenage parents maintain skills of daily living and parenting. The program is perfect for parenting youth that need and want to become responsible, goal-driven, self-motivated, and productive persons. The program gives teenage mothers a sense of pride and involvement in a program designed to allow a young mother to grow into adulthood, while becoming a responsible, nurturing parent.

The youth and infant will live together, and the mother will complete skills of daily living as supervised by program staff.  Parenting teens become more self-sufficient by demonstrating an increase in:

  • parenting skills (including attending our Parenting Classes and parenting skills groups)
  • daily living skills (including money management and housing maintenance)
  • vocational skills (including job procurement on or off campus, as well as future career planning), and
  • educational skills (working toward completion of high school diploma/GED and/or preparing for a higher education plan)

The purpose of the program is to offer a chance for a teenage mother to increase her level of independence by challenging the youth to take responsibility for all areas of her life. Our goal is for the parenting teen to be empowered to make positive life decisions on behalf of herself and her child, and to become a productive citizen.
