The difference a dinner table makes

We just had a new family move into one of our Family Housing units with three children, ages 5, 7 and 8. The school bus will start picking them up next week, but in the meantime, one of our staff members, Hillary, has been picking them up at 7 a.m. for the drive to school. The first morning Hillary pulled up, the children piled in her car and were excitedly talking over each other about their new house and beds and blankets, and they even told her how excited they were to say their prayers and go to sleep in their new rooms.

This morning, five-year-old Sharde had even more to report to Hillary. She said she loved last night because “we got to be like a real family and sit around the dinner table and pass plates. I love having a dinner table.”

I get chill bumps as I share this story – what a profound impact you are having on children and families with your support of the Children’s Home. As many of us sit around our dinner tables tonight with our own families, may we all think of Sharde and her family and say a prayer for them and all the other families in our housing program who are working hard to stay together.
